Fred Degerberg wrote 101 Self Defense and Safety Tips, which you can download free. He chose the following 5 as the top ones that the every woman should know:
1. Be aware of yourself and your surroundings. Don’t let yourself be preoccupied with thoughts of work, school or home. When you’re on the street you need to be alert.
2. The most dangerous thing you can do is feel afraid and not act. Fear warns you. Many victims afterwards say that they had a feeling something was going to happen and they ignored it. Listen to your intuition and take action.
3. When it is obvious that you are going to be attacked, take action. By fighting the attack, you only increase your chance of survival. The notion that you will only anger the attacker with your lack of compliance, making him more violent is false. The attacker is already angry and violent. Fight until you know you’re safe and can get away.
4. Take aim when dealing with your assailant: the eyes, groin and throat are the most vulnerable areas to strike because they are composed of soft tissue. A successful blow to any one of these three areas on a male will almost guarantee you valuable time to escape.
5. Above all, do not allow the assailant to take you to another location. Do whatever it takes — the situation grows deadlier when it moves to a more secluded location.
Great tips! Degerberg runs a martial arts school in Chicago. His school teaches fighting systems from all over the world, which sounds great, since they would have something for everyone. I can’t personally recommend them, because I’ve never even been to any of their schools.

My friend C.T.’s self-defense instructor recieved a letter from a female student and friend of C.T.’s a couple days ago. Here it is:
I just wanted to let you all know of something that happened to me today in the Target parking lot. Be aware of this and let everyone you know be aware so this does not happen to anyone else. I was at Target today to return something which only took a couple of minutes. When I pulled into the parking lot a man in a car pulled in a couple spaces down from me. He started to go into the store about the same time as I did, then turned back around and went back to his car. I went into Target returned my items and walked back out to get into my car. When I walked out, he was walking away from my car carrying a small gas can. I noticed there was fluid on the side of my car and a puddle beside it. I got into my car not sure of what happened, wrote down his license plate # and left. He followed me out of the parking lot. I was only able to drive about a half a mile and my car started acting funny. It died on me as I was driving and I was able to pull into an area business along the highway. I just sat in my car and ccalled the police.
The man drove by three times as I waited. The police who came took a report and said that he had poured sugar water into my gas tank which is what made my car stall. It was a great way to get a woman by herself to be stranded on the streets. Luckily for me I was able to stop where there were people around. The police know where the car came from and are working on this now. Not sure what will happen but my car is now in the shop not running, but it could have been much worse for me. Just be aware that this is happening and always be aware of your surroundings. It certainly scared me and I am grateful that nothing else happened.
Luckily this woman saved herself from even worse victimization by pulling over in a populated area. I posted this letter so people can know the threats out there. What do you think?

Unfortunately, sexual assailants have tools at their fingertips such as date-rape drugs to incapacitate victims. By sneaking these drugs into a drink, these assailants can cause victims to unwittingly incapacitate themselves. To successfully protect oneself, one must understand date-rape drugs, and take proper precautions.
The three most common forms of date-rape drugs are Rohypnol (Roofies, Rope, Ruffies, R2, Ruffles, Roche, Forget-pill), Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB, Liquid Extacy, Liquid X, Scoop, Easy Lay), and Ketamine Hydrochloride (’K', Special K, Vitamin K, Ket).
KidPower.org explains date-rape drugs:
What are date-rape drugs and what do they do?
Date-rape drugs often work quickly, within 10-20 minutes, and are difficult to spot because they have no smell, taste, texture or color. They come in liquid, powder, and pill forms that can be easily added to drinks without someone’s knowledge. The drugs cause victims to become ill, disoriented, very sleepy and unable to move or think clearly, and/or incapable of remembering what happened to them. The effects of the drugs can be intensified by alcohol and can last anywhere from 2-24 hours.
Rapists are using the date rape drugs as a way to overpower their victims. The drugs are, sadly, easily accessible, especially on college campuses and in college towns. Many are legal for other purposes and are therefore readily available and inexpensive. Attackers may bring a person a drink, like a soda, beer, or coffee, and put the drug in it. Or they put the drug in the drink or food while the targeted person is temporarily away from it (i.e. in the bathroom, talking to friends, etc.). Often, when the victim becomes ill or disoriented, the rapist is able to take the victim to a different location easily to commit a sexual assault. The victim wakes up later and is rarely able to remember what happened.
Read the KidPower article on date-rape drugs.
